Selecting products for sensitive skin

Selecting products for sensitive skin

There is no single rule that can be applied when selecting products for sensitive skin. In particluar, the use of fragrance ingredients is problematic when it comes to consumer health and safety, these common synthetic fragrances are an unknown mixture of thousands of chemicals. The key is to understand what triggers adverse side effects and how to best avoid exposure to irritants, especially when choosing cosmetic and personal care products. Choosing fragrance-free products does not necessarily protect your health, but avoiding synthetic fragrances will greatly reduce the number of chemicals you are exposed to. Organic Beauty Brands encourages everyone to always read the product label and to choose products based on their ingredients and not the marketing hype.

Natural flower extracts, oils and resins are generally safe and healthy for most people. But, when should you avoid essential oils and fragrances altogether? And, which brands offer products for sensitive skin?  Natural and Organic brands choose Essential Oils over synthetic fragrances, for most people this is a safe and healthy way to avoid unnecessary and complex synthetic fragrance ingredients that can be irritating and sensitising to the skin and other sensitive areas like the eyes, nose and armpits. Common fragrances typically consist of thousands of different man-made synthetic chemicals that are used to create a single aroma. By comparison, Essential oils, extracts and resins contain only approximately 1-5 ingredients that are sourced from plants.

"The trend towards Natural perfumes and fragrances is increasing as many people discover the truth about harmful chemicals in cosmetics, personal care and household items."

Times when you should avoid fragrances altogether include the very young or the elderly, during pregnancy or times of illness where you should take extra precaution when using fragrances or products containing aromatic components like essential oils (herbs and dried extracts are far less potent and not usually an issue for allergy sufferers). Women who are pregnant should also avoid essential oils completely or look for products that use less than 1% fragrances, but this is not typically stated on the label. Safe Cosmetics Australia has a new seal that identifies products containing less than <1% fragrances, you can look for the Australian Allergy Certified seal™ of approval. Understanding what Certification’s represent is also much easier than learning about the pros and cons of over 40,000+ chemicals used in Australian products. Worldwide the total number of chemicals that are available for use is over 80,000 with 1,000 new chemicals being developed EVERY year.

Essential Oils are revered for their therapeutic effect, but what does this mean? The power of scent can only enhance your well-being when the aroma is sourced from Nature. Essential Oils, herbs and extracts have been used in food, cosmetics and other items for thousands of years. Science supports the fact that esssential oils have amazing therapeutic properties, as does the Australian TGA Therapeutic Goods Administration. Sure a synthetic aroma can smell half decent, but it's made from a concoction of chemicals that are potentially causing harm to your body. Just ask an asthmatic about fragrances and you'll discover their life-threatening reaction to synthetic aromas.

Looking for healthier products? Are you tired of scanning product ingredient labels? Just look for Safe Cosmetics Australia's seal of approval. The Australian Allergy Certified™ seal identifies products that contain less than <1% fragrance ingredients or products that have been clinically tested and found to be safe for sensitive skin and allergy sufferers.

Fragrances both synthetic or Natural, are the number one cause of allergy and skin irritation. While some prefer essential oils, others may need fragrance free products to avoid adverse reactions. People who suffer from allergies to specific essential oils, for example peru balsam or sensitising citrus oils, have to be very careful to avoid these natural fragrances completely. So choosing synthetic fragrances may be the safer alternative for some people, while avoiding synthetic fragrances is key for others, as is avoiding fragrances completely or choosing products that contain less than <1% fragrance ingredients, this is the safe usage for sensitive skin.
