Parabens, are they known to cause skin allergies?

Parabens, are they known to cause skin allergies?

Parabens are widely used synthetic preservatives that can be found in 99% of cancer tumors.

These synthetic preservatives have known oestrogen mimicking properties. Parabens occur naturally at low levels in certain foods for example barley, strawberries, currents, vanilla, carrots, and onions. Although a synthetic preparation derived from petrochemicals is used in cosmetics.

Paraben’s are used in products to kill bacteria, prevent the growth of mold and prolong the shelf-life of products indefinitely, they have no actual benefit to the health of the skin & hair other than to keep the product formulation from spoiling.

Common parabens include methylparaben (E number E218), ethylparaben (E214), propylparaben (E216) and butylparaben. Less common parabens include isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, benzylparaben and their sodium salts. How are they used? Usage ranges from 0.01%-0.3% although the FDA permits the use of parabens up to 25% and considers them safe for use even though the FDA is aware that estrogenic activity in the body is associated with certain forms of breast cancer.

Why does Safe Cosmetics Australia [SCA] consider this chemical toxic?

The wide use of parabens leads to increased exposure and toxin accumulation. Parabens are classified as a Endocrine Disruptor, estrogen mimickers. Parabens are rapidly absorbed, metabolized and excreted, these synthetic preservatives are well known to cause skin allergies resulting in contact dermatitis and accumulative toxicity in humans.

Studies have shown direct links to serious health concerns, but most scientists will not conclude toxicity concerns as studies are inconclusive due to the high number of parabens found in the body and the inability to identify the different types of parabens once absorbed, resulting in insufficient, inconclusive data.

What is the Australian Government doing? No data or concerns are available – not listed as a priority chemical.
