Can a cup of coffee brighten your complexion?

Can a cup of coffee brighten your complexion?

Coffee has amazing anti-inflammatory benefits. Most people enjoy a cup of coffee for the instant pick-me-up, but is your coffee buzz improving your complexion? Caffeine helps to reduce skin redness and inflammation when applied to the skin. According to a study in 1978, at the University of Tennessee, researchers discovered that adding extracts of caffeine to anti-inflammatory creams significantly increased the effectiveness of the product. This is great news for coffee lovers, but is there a limit to how much coffee is actually good for your skin?

Some would argue that drinking too much coffee leads to dry, dull and pitted skin. For this reason, Nutritionists recommend that we limit our intake as drinking too much of anything can have a negative effect on your complexion, but this is generally caused by dehydration or too much sugar. Drinking too much water can also have an undesirable effect on the skin, flushing essential nutrients from your body can have terrible effects on your skin tone.

So why does caffeine perform so well in skin care?

When applied topically to the skin caffeine has a positive effect on skin tone, it also works to improve dark under eye circles, puffiness and inflammation. In an article by Sylvie Tremblay, for livestrong.com, her research found that "caffeine reduces the build-up of blood under your eyes which contributes to dark shadows. Several eye creams contain caffeine, or you can apply moist tea bags to your eyes for five minutes to reduce puffiness and give you a more alert appearance".

Can caffeine also reduce the appearance of cellulite?

We would all love a bottle of cellulite reducing cream right?! The good news is that several studies support this theory, there is science behind this miracle and we can thank caffeine for this. When applied to cellulite, skin creams containing caffeine have been found to reduce the size of cellulite fat cells by 17% percent and further decreasing the hip's diameter by almost 70 percent!

Would you like a coffee scrub recipe that is so easy?

Harness the power of caffeine by saving your coffee grinds or making it fresh. The quickest way to make a body scrub is to save your coffee grinds and mix them with your normal body cream or body wash. You can do this in hand or prepare a small tub to use each week. In general, once you mix two or more ingredients together this creates a new formula without preservatives, freshly made skin care recipes usually keep for 5-7 days if stored correctly ie in the fridge or below 30 degrees in your bathroom cupboard or shower.

Optional ingredients:

  • For dry skin, try adding a few drops or more of olive oil for a nourishing body scrub.
  • Look for "vegetable glycerin" at your local supermarket. Glycerin retains skin-moisture and is an excellent base for adding essential oils to your scrub. Take 10 ml of glycerin and add 5-10 drops of Essential Oil, mix into 100g of coffee grinds and apply in the shower or bath or use as a foot scrub or for gardening hands.

Directions for use:

  • Apply to dry or moist skin in upwards and outwards circular motions.
  • Pay particular attention to your knees, elbows and other dry skin.
  • Rinse and follow with your favorite body moisturiser.
