Boost your complexion with Vitamin C

Nutritionists will tell you time and again that boosting your immune system every day with Vitamin C is essential to keeping you healthy and looking your best. Taking particular care of your gut health is vital, how your body digests, excretes and repairs its self can make a noticeable change to how your complexion appears. Planning your diet is the sure way of keeping your levels of Vitamin C effective in preventing the common cold and maintaining your general health. Getting enough sleep each night plays a key role, the body's repair phase is in peak mode between the hours of 10 pm and 4 am. Without adequate rest your body will suffer and so will your immune system. 

At some point, we all need to take charge of our health and give our bodies the best chance possible at fighting off the common cold or simply to achieve a bright vibrant and healthy looking complexion. Consistency is the key with Vitamin C, it's about giving your body enough Vitamin C on a day to day basis to maintain adequate levels consistently. 

To make the most out of this power-packed Vitamin, plan to have the right food on hand. It's important to have a rich source of Vitamin C from several food groups and not just citrus fruit. Did you know that standard store bought orange juice is considered a discretionary food? That's right, nutritionists will tell you that orange juice is in the same food group as a donut, it's a once a week food due to the high sugar content.

Here are some suggested foods to bost your health:

  • Look for bright yellow or orange vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin and sweet potato.
  • Mixed green leafy salads are perfect with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper and lemon.
  • Green vegetables are also on the menu, broccoli head and stems, but don't eat the leaves.
  • Vegetables such as kale, cabbage, bok choy, parsley, brussel sprouts and bell peppers.
  • Pickled and fermented food like sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha are delicious.
  • Papaya, strawberries, pineapples, kiwi, cantaloupe and grapefruit have the highest source of Vitamin C.

Recipe - Broccoli Chips

Chop up the stems like potato chips and pan fry with rice brand oil adding a dash of soy sauce once they are cooked through. You'll never throw out the broccoli stems again! You can also dice the stems into small pieces and add to any stir fry, just don't eat the leaves as they can have a toxic effect on your body.
